'78 was the silver anniversary of the GM Chevrolet Corvette, recognizing the 25th year of production. It was also the first year that the Corvette model had the honor of being an official pace car during the running of the 62nd Indianapolis 500. The 1978 model featured a large wraparound back window and a fastback roofline with Goodyear Eagle GT tires. Glass roof panels were a new innovation that year together with 60 series radial tires and a CB radio. Also, all 1978 Corvette models came with special commemorative 25 Anniversary emblems. A four-speed manual gearbox was fitted as standard and a higher output 350 ci. V8 engine was available, although only with an automatic transmission. A total of 46,776 cars were built at a base price of $9,750. Of these, 15,283 cars sported the two-tone Anniversary paint job.
