With no new Monte Carlo models in the works, Chevrolet did the next best thing and improvised a solution to the problem. To keep costs to a minimum, General Motors simply extended the back window glass on the Monte Carlo SS. The Super Sport option, which technically was a separate extra-cost package, originally came out in the middle of 1983. Unlike the Aerocoupe version, the regular Monte Carlo SS was an immediate hit in the showroom as well as on the racetracks. The car's sloping nose was developed in a wind tunnel and was a key part of its high-performance image.
