The '71 Cutlass Supreme with the rare "SX" package, identified outwardly by only small die cast "SX" emblems on the front fenders, was aimed directly at the then popular luxury touring car market. The 1971 model year, the second and last year of the "SX" option, marked the advent of low compression engines designed to run on unleaded fuel and power output was now being rated in terms of net horsepower. Olds replaced the two-barrel carburetion used on the 1970 "SX" 455 with a Rochester Quadrajet four-barrel for 1971. The 1971 Cutlass Supreme "SX" could cruise all day long at 70-80 mph with engine speeds well below 3,000 RPM.
