Studebaker made the Americans turned head again with the 1953 Starliner. With its aesthetic design by Raymond Loewy, this American car stood out from the rest of the vehicles with its European look. The Starliner Commander 8 differentiated itself from other cars of that era with its low-slung design, accompanied by sloping front hood and large wheel openings exposing the tires. Studebaker offered two models, the coupe and sedan, thinking the practical sedan, which is higher and shorter in body, would be more popular. Instead, the coupe outsold the sedan by four to one.
The 1953 Starliner had 232 cu. in. V8 engine with an output of 120 hp and 190 ft. lb. torque. It could perform 0-60 mph in 17 sec. with top speed of 93.2 mph. The base was rather long since it rode on the Landcruiser’s 120.5 in. wheelbase. Studebaker Starliner was chosen as one of the greatest cars in the twentieth century.
