The '71 Buick Riviera featured one of the greatest styling exercises in automotive history. Dubbed "the boat tail", the look was supposed to draw upon stylish cars of the 1930's, but putting the design on a 218-inch length, 122-inch wheelbase, 4,247 lb car resulted in a look that buyers either loved or hated. Because GM had to meet stricter emission standards, the 455 cu. in. engine was detuned down to 315 hp and the top speed dropped to 120 mph. A similar model of this car was used in the Clint Eastwood film "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot."
