The 1957 Mercury Turnpike Cruiser is really a wonderful 'gadget' car, designed to be America's first production dream car with a totally futuristic appearance. Some of the appointments that make the car unusual are the spaceship like 'feeler' antennas coming out by the upper outside windshield, which are just ornamental, roof-level air intakes at each side of the windshield to allow a gentle stream of fresh air into the interior, a key-board controlled multi-drive Merc-O-Matic transmission, and a power-operated rear window. When the retracting rear window was down, 'breezeway' ventilation was delivered to the car. The car was also had power steering, power brakes, power windows, dual outside rearview mirrors, whitewall tires, tinted glass, memory power seats, clock, tachometer, power antenna and dual exhausts. Powered by a 368 cubic inch V-8 that cranked out 290 horsepower, this car was meant for the open road. With the addition of the cruiser fender skirts, the car has a sassy stance. An open model of this car was used as the pace car for the Indianapolis 500 Race.
